Prof.  Albena Dinkova-Kostova – a leading researcher of cellular defence mechanisms from the University of Dundee, Scotland, was a guest lecturer at MU–Varna within the project “Enhancement of Translational Excellence Achievement in Medicine (MUVE-TEAM)" under item 3.5 “Intellectual Property Protection and Technology Transfer".

Prof. Kostova delivered a public lecture on “Protein Nrf2 – Major Regulator of the Antioxidant Response of the Body" at the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Prof. Albena Dinkova-Kostova's research is focused mainly on the way cells protect themselves from stress and toxic damage that lead to chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions. It is centred on protein Nrf2 – a major regulator of the antioxidant response of the body. She studies how natural compounds (e.g. sulforaphane from broccoli) can activate this protein and protect tissues.

The guest lecturer is a scientist with international recognition. In addition to being included in Clarivate's list of highly cited researchers, Prof. Kostova is also a member of prestigious scientific organisations and a holder of numerous awards for biomedical research.

Professor Albena Dinkova-Kostova, a scientist in the field of Fundamental Biomedicine from the Faculty of Medicine, was included in the “Highly Cited Researchers 2025" list compiled by Clarivate. This is the seventh consecutive year in which she has been ranked among the top 1% of scientists worldwide by number of citations in the respective field and year, reflecting their significant influence within the global research community.

Being included in Clarivate's list for seven consecutive years is an exceptionally rare achievement. It showcases not just one successful project, but a sustained impact that is changing the way scientists around the world understand disease prevention.
