Leading researcher

Prof. Krastena Nikolova, PhD

The research group falls under the Food and Nutrition priority scientific area stated by the Medical University - Varna. The group aims to develop nanotechnology-based multifunctional dietary supplements combining the strong antiviral and antioxidant properties of several biologically active substances (BAS) (incl. Chlorella spp. extract, Passiflora edulis extract, Ziziphus jujuba extract). The products are intended to be applied as adaptogens, immune modulation, and antiviral therapy. The broad spectrum of activity of the chosen BAS and extracts determines a wide range of health disorders, in which the products in question may find their application – from chronic non-communicable diseases to communicable diseases of social importance, such as COVID 19. The main activities related to the implementation of the group's work program are:

1. Equipment of a high-tech research laboratory for the development of multifunctional nutritional supplements based on nanotechnology.

2. Application of advanced technologies for the development of new multifunctional dietary supplements based on nanocarriers of BAS, with improved biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic characteristics.
