The scientific community of MU-Varna, the research group “Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Comorbidities" under the project “Medical University-Varna: Enhancement of Translational Excellence Achievement in Medicine (MUVE-TEAM)" and international partners celebrated the World Sleep Day–15th March with the Conference “Sleep Equity for Global Health".

The Conference began with a minute of silence on the first day of the National mourning in memory of His Holiness Patriarch Neophyte.

The Forum brought to the attention of the audience new scientific developments of multidisciplinary teams from Europe and worldwide, whose scope of competence comprised various studies in the field of Seep Medicine.

In his speech to the participants, the Rector of MU-Varna Prof. Dr. Dimitar Raykov emphasised that over the recent years, the University, together with the Bulgarian Society of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Snoring and the World Sleep Society, had initiated numerous prevention and prophylaxis initiatives dedicated to the World Sleep Day. The Rector underlined that it had already become a tradition for MU-Varna to organise free diagnostic-consultative examinations for testing people for sleep disorders at the University Laboratory. Prof. Raykov highlighted the activities of the specialists in the multidisciplinary laboratory teams, who over the last eight years had examined and consulted plenty of patients with sleep problems, as well as people whose profession required regular screening for concentration disorders.

Congratulatory addresses to the participants at the Forum were also presented by Prof. Dr. Hesham Negm, MD, PhD from Egypt and Ofer Jacobowitz, MD, PhD from the USA.

Prof. Dr. Mario Milkov, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at MU-Varna and a leading researcher in the Scientific Group “Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Comorbidities" specified that among the topics of the symposium there were studies by international scientists whose activities had been focused on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Mr. Carlos Reina from Spain presented “The Functional Assessment in OSA Patients". A study on “Correlation of DISE to the Sleep Lab" was presented by Mr. Itzhak Braverman from Israel.

Two scientists from Italy participated at the Forum with their individual developments. Mr. Giovanni Cammaroto presented “Upper Airways Surgery and Positional OSA", and Mr. Manuele Casale – “Barbed Pharyngoplasty for OSA". The Brazilian researcher Fabio Lorenzetti introduced the audience to “Palatal Procedures to Treat Snoring and OSA". The Indian scientist Anand Raju Anand presented “Role of Tongue in OSA", and Mustafa Kemal Adali from Turkey put to the fore “The Importance of ENT Examination in the Evaluation of OSA". The Egyptian researcher Ahmed Yassin Bahgat joined the Forum with a study on Sleep Medicine.

The Conference, as well as the discussion panel Round Table on the Problems of OSA and Comorbidity, piqued the interest of undergraduate and postgraduate students at MU-Varna, including numerous international students from the English-Language Training Programme at the University.

The event took place with the assistance of project No BG-RRP-2.004-0009-C02 “Medical University–Varna: Enhancement of Translational Excellence Achievement in Medicine (MUVE-TEAM)", to Scientific Group 3.2.2 “Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Comorbidities".​
